Jason Baldwin leads SCORE Trophy-Truck
Thru Round 4, Jeffrey/Pfankuch lead five Class 1-2/1600 racers
At the top of 2004 SCORE Desert Series point leaderboard
Marking leading unlimited Class 1, sixth overall
Heading to 37th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, Nov. 16-20
LOS
ANGELES (September 20, 2004) -- Consistency has been the key to
success this season for Southern California’s Brian Jeffrey and Adam Pfankuch
who continue to remain on top of the overall and Class 1-2/1600 point-leader
board in the 2004 SCORE Desert Series. The talented pair have combined for one
win, two seconds and a third through the recent 9th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm
300.
After Round 4 of
the five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Series, Jeffrey, 42, of Acton, and Pfankuch,
22, of Carlsbad, finished second in their class in January’s 10th SCORE
Laughlin Desert Challenge before winning their class (which had a season-high
39 starters) in February’s 18th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, finishing
second in June’s 36th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (with 39 starters again) and
third in the recent SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in a VW-powered Dunrite 1600cc
open-wheel desert race car.
The pair continues
to put some serious pressure on the rest of the SCORE racers for not only the
2004 class title in 1-2/1600, but also the coveted SCORE Overall point championship
as well.
The World’s
foremost desert racing series now heads back to Mexico, Nov. 16-20, for the
season-ending 37th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, a peninsula run from Ensenada
to La Paz, Baja California. This year’s granddaddy of all desert racing
will include the $40,000 Terrible’s Bonus Purse.
With the $10,000
Kartek bonus also awaiting the 2004 SCORE Overall point champion, a total of
just 79 points separate the top 15 overall point leaders after the first four
rounds of 2004. SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position
and number of vehicles that started the race within each class.
As they have three
times, Jeffrey and Pfankuch were happy to finish behind Las Vegas’ Rob
MacCachren and Danny Anderson in a race-high field of 37 starters in Class 1-2/1600
in Primm. With his third win in four races in a Fraley-VW, MacCachren moved
into title contention, currently sitting second overall and second in Class
1-2/1600, just 10 points behind Jeffrey/Pfankuch, who lead the overall and class
standings, 301-291.
Class
1-2/1600 currently holds the top five spots in the chase for the 2004 SCORE
Overall crown.
Only
five points separate third through fifth in overall and Class 1-2/1600 points.
Mexican brothers Leonardo and Alejandro Navarrete, of Mexicali, are third with
268 in a Jimco-VW, just three ahead of brothers Travis and Brad Fletcher, Westminster,
CA, in their Baja Shop-VW. Three more points back in fifth is the team of Rick
Boyer, Bakersfield, CA/Steve Roberts, Bullhead City, CA, in a Lothringer-VW.
This is the first
season of the Jeffrey/Pfankuch tandem. Jeffrey, who won Class 1-2/1600 in the
2002 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 to capture his second SCORE season point title,
was third in his class points last season. Pfankuch won three races in his class
last year as a rookie enroute to winning the 2003 SCORE Class 1-2/1600 season
title with Eric Allen, San Marcos, CA, who was driver of record last season
with him.
Driving
solo and without a win in all four races so far, Jason Baldwin, has consistently
driven to a fourth, second and two third place finishes to take over the point
lead in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck season points. He is also eighth overall
with 235 points, driving the No. 86 Baldwin Racing Ford F-150.
“I’m
living a dream right now, so please don’t wake me up,” said Jeffrey.
“As large and as strong competitively as our class is, you could have
never told me that we could be leading with just one win, especially when a
team as great as MacCachren’s has won three races. Now we are on the verge
of something very, very special, but we are looking at the toughest race of
the year in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.”
The team of John
Marking, El Cajon, CA/Chris Harrold, Chula Vista, CA, are sixth overall
in points and the new Class 1 point leaders in their Jimco-Chevy, with 250 points.
Seventh overall and second in Class 1 is veteran Mark McMillin, El Cajon, CA,
with 237 points in another Jimco-Chevy.
Third in Class
1 and ninth overall is Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst, with 234 points in the
Terrible Herbst Motorsports Smithbuilt-Ford.
Only six points
separate 10th through 15th in overall points heading to Mexico for the granddaddy
of all desert races.
Andy
McMillin and his father Scott McMillin, of Poway, CA, (Mark McMillin’s
nephew and brother) had their first did-not-finish of the year in Primm, pushing
them back from first to fourth in Class 1 and tied for 10th overall with 228
points in another McMillin Racing Jimco-Chevy.
Tied for 10th overall
with the McMillins are a pair of class leaders: Steve Myers, Newport Beach,
CA/George Erl, Huntington Beach, CA, in a Jimco-Toyota (Class 10) and
Tom Watson/Time Noe, El Centro, Calif. in a Jimco-VW (SCORE Lite).
Tied
for second in SCORE Trophy-Truck are class rookie Alan Pflueger, Honolulu, who
was won two straight races in his No. 28 Pflueger Racing Chevy Silverado and
the team of Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico/Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas, in the
No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150. Both teams have 221 points.
After leading the
first three races this season, teammates Mark Post, San Juan Capistrano, CA/Jerry
Whelchel, Rancho Santa Maragarita, CA, have fallen back to fourth in the
featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division with 217 points in the Riviera Racing Ford
F-150 after a DNF in Primm.
The father and
son team of Mark and C.J. Hutchins, Henderson, Nev., are tied for 13th overall
and second in Class 10 with 224 points in a Jimco-Honda. Tied with them is John
Scharf/Ed Bonanni, Huntington Beach, CA, who are sixth in Class 1-2/1600
in their Lothringer-VW.
The three undefeated
class leaders after three races in 2004 are: Donald Moss, Sacramento (Class
3, Ford Bronco), Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9, Garibay-VW), and Eric
Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico, (Class 11, VW Sedan).
In Class 7, Craig
Turner, Yorba Linda, CA, leads with three class wins this year in his Ford
Ranger.
After
Round 4, the 2004 SCORE Desert Series class point leaders in car and truck classes
with two wins are: Dave Raimonde, Phoenix (Class 8, Chevy C1500), George Seeley,
Glendale, Calif. (Class 5, VW Baja Bug) and Bob Graham, Yorba Linda, CA/Mike
Horner, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Class 7S, Toyota Tacoma).
Among the motorcycle
class leaders is the American Honda Class 22 team of Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills,
CA/Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, CA, who have now won nine straight
SCORE races together on a Honda XR650R.
The overall and
Class 25 ATV point leaders are Ruben Martin/Gilberto Santana, Tijuana, Mexico,
on a Bombardier Baja X.
The live drawing
for starting positions, by class, for the upcoming 37th Annual Tecate SCORE
Baja 1000 will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, on the Dust To Glory
state at the Off-Road Expo and the Pomona Fairplex near Los Angeles. Festivities
will include a vehicle display, a meet the drivers session and a sneak preview
of the upcoming documentary feature film ‘Dust to Glory,’ a tribute
to the most legendary race in all of desert racing.
The 37th Annual
Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 expects nearly 275 vehicles competing in 23 Pro and 5
Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs in Mexico.
The 1,017.31-mile
race will run the length of the majestic Baja California peninsula. The popular
event will feature the $40,000 Terrible’s Bonus purse, which includes
a $20,000 bonus to the first overall 4-wheel vehicle.
The race will also
culminate the chase for both the $10,000 Kartek Off-Road bonus and the $12,000
Toyota True-Grit and Toyota Milestone Awards.
The Kartek Off-Road
bonus goes to the 2004 SCORE Overall point champion.
The prestigious
Toyota Milestone Awards are presented to every racer who completes every required
mile of every race in the 2004 SCORE Desert Series. The $12,000 Toyota True
Grit purse is split among the SCORE season point champions who are also Toyota
Milestone award winners in four non-factory-backed classes. This is the 18th
consecutive year that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. has teamed with SCORE to present
these prestigious awards.
Pre-race festivities
will be held around the Riviera del Pacifico Convention Center in Ensenada and
the San Nicolas Hotel, on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 16-17. The race will start
on Thursday, Nov. 18, in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Convention Center
with motorcycles and ATVs getting the green flag at approximately 6:30 a.m.,
followed by the car and truck classes at approximately 10:30 a.m. Vehicles will
start one every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race. The finish line will be
on the outskirts of La Paz adjacent to the tourism office.
The post-race SCORE
Survivor Award’s Celebration will be held Saturday afternoon in La Paz
and is scheduled to be held at the Crowne Plaza Resort, adjacent to the official
finish line of the race.
