Jason Baldwin wins SCORE Trophy-Truck title
Brian Jeffrey and Adam Pfankuch capture 2004 SCORE Overall,
Class 1-2/1600 2004 SCORE Desert Series point championships
Rojas/Vega in M/C; Martin/Santana in ATVs to be honored
As well during SCORE Awards Night. Dec. 11 in Primm, Nev.
LOS
ANGELES, CA (December 2, 2004) -- Consistency was the key to success
this season for Southern Calif.’s Brian Jeffrey and Adam Pfankuch as the
talented duo captured the 2004 SCORE Desert Series Overall and Class 1-2/1600
point championships, the first SCORE overall title and second in the class for
both of them.
The talented pair
combined for one win, three seconds and a third during the five-races that comprised
the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series.
Jeffrey, 42, of
Acton, and Pfankuch, 22, of Carlsbad, finished second in their class in January’s
10th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge before winning their class (which had a
season-high 39 starters) in February’s 18th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250,
finishing second in June’s 36th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 (with 39 starters
again), third in the September’s 9th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 and second
in November’s 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in a VW-powered Dunrite 1600cc
open-wheel desert race car.
Mexican race teams
captured the 2004 SCORE Overall Motorcycle and ATV crowns. Gerardo Rojas and
Sergio Vega topped the motorcycle divisions while Ruben Martin and Gilberto
Santana topped the ATV racers for their first SCORE season titles.
SCORE points are
determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles that started
the race within each class.
With their SCORE
Overall point championship, Jeffrey and Pfankuch will also receive the $10,000
Kartek bonus, provided by the Kartek Off Road company of Southern California.
The championship team, along with all of this year’s SCORE Desert Series
point champions as well as the 2004 SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year winners and
the $12,000 SCORE Toyota True Grit and Milestone Award winners will be honored
at the annual SCORE Awards Night next Saturday (Dec. 11) at 6 p.m. at the Primm
Valley Resort, in Primm, Nev.
“At times
like this, it’s hard to put things in perspective, but from where we’re
sitting, winning the SCORE Overall point championship is nothing less than unbelievable,”
said Jeffrey. “Adam is the speed part of this team and I guess you could
say I’m the conservative one, but for a first-year team we blended extremely
well and so did our combined race crews. The competition in Class 1-2/1600 was
phenomenal this year, and to think we could edge out a great racer like Rob
MacCachren, who won four races this year, is just a tremendous accomplishment
that is almost beyond words.”
As they did four
times this year, Jeffrey and Pfankuch were happy to finish behind Las Vegas’
Rob MacCachren and Danny Anderson in a race-high field of 25 starters in Class
1-2/1600 in Mexico. With his fourth win in five races in a Fraley-VW in Mexico’s
season-finale, MacCachren finished second overall and second in Class 1-2/1600,
just four points behind Jeffrey/Pfankuch, who won, 420-416.
Class
1-2/1600 earned the top five spots
in the 2004 SCORE Overall point standings.
Only
eight points separated third through fifth in the overall and Class 1-2/1600
points. Mexican brothers Leonardo and Alejandro Navarrete, of Mexicali, were
third with 378 in a Jimco-VW. Tied for fourth in overall and Class 1-2/1600
points with 370 were brothers Travis and Brad Fletcher, Westminster, CA,
in their Baja Shop-VW and the team of Rick Boyer, Bakersfield, CA/Steve
Roberts, Bullhead City, CA, in a Lothringer-VW.
This was the first
season of the Jeffrey/Pfankuch tandem. Jeffrey, who won Class 1-2/1600 in the
2002 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 to capture his second SCORE season point title,
was third in his class points last season. Pfankuch won three races in his class
last year as a rookie enroute to winning the 2003 SCORE Class 1-2/1600 season
title with Eric Allen, San Marcos, CA, who was driver of record last season
with him.
Consistency paid
off even more in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division as Jason Baldwin drove
solo for nearly 2,100 miles during the season, didn’t
win a race, but won the coveted season class point championship while finishing
10th in overall points. Jason Baldwin, of Laguna Beach, CA, drove consistently
to a fourth, second, two third place finishes and a season-ending ninth in Mexico
in the No. 66 Baldwin Racing Ford F-150 for 340 points. His younger brother
Josh finished fourth in class points in the No. 86 Baldwin Racing Ford F-150.
Despite not winning
a race, consistency again was rewarded as the team of John Marking, El Cajon,
CA/Chris Harrold, Chula Vista, CA, finished sixth overall in points
and won the Class 1 point title in their Jimco-Chevy, with 361 points. Winning
three races, including the overall in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, wasn’t
enough for Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst, who finished a bittersweet season seventh
overall and second in Class 1 points with 355 in the Terrible Herbst Motorsports
Smithbuilt-Ford.
San Diego’s
prominent McMillin Racing claimed both the eighth and ninth overall place in
2004 SCORE points as well as third and fourth in Class 1. Veteran Mark McMillin,
El Cajon, CA, won one race this season as was eighth and third with 345
points in another Jimco-Chevy.
The son and father
team of Andy and Scott McMillin, of Poway, CA, (Mark McMillin’s nephew
and brother) finished ninth overall and fourth in Class 1with 343 points in
another McMillin Racing Jimco-Chevy.
Second
in SCORE Trophy-Truck this year with one race win and 11th in overall points
with 331 was Mark Post, San Juan Capistrano, CA, in the No. 3 Riviera Racing
Ford F-150. Third in SCORE Trophy-Truck and 12th in overall points with 329
was the team of Gus Vildosola, Mexicali, Mexico/Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas, in
the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.
Winning their first
SCORE point champion and finishing 13th in overall points was the team of Tom
Watson/Tim Noe, El Centro, Calif. in a Jimco-VW (SCORE Lite).
While many class
point battles were very close this season, none were closer than Class 10 where
just two points separated the top three finishers. Steve Myers, Newport Beach,
CA/George Erl, Huntington Beach, CA, in a Jimco-Toyota edged out John
Cooley, Santee, CA/Chris Westwood, San Diego (Alumi Craft-VW) by one point
and Mark Hutchins/C.J. Hutchins, Henderson, Nev. (Jimco-Honda) by just two points.
The three teams finished 14th, 15, and 16th respectively in overall points.
Two racers went
undefeated in the 2004 SCORE Desert Series to earn class championships. Donald
Moss, Sacramento won his third straight Class 3 season title in a Ford Bronco
while Eric Solorzano, Tijuana, Mexico earned his sixth SCORE Class 11 crown
in a VW Sedan.
In
Class 5, George Seeley, Glendale, CA, won three times to earn his eighth SCORE
class crown in an unlimited VW Baja Bug.
Winning four of
five races in 2004 Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico, won Class 9 for the fourth
time in a Garibay-VW and John Griffin, Mission Viejo, CA, won once this
season and came from behind to win his fourth straight season title in Stock
Full in his Hummer H1.
In Class 8, Todd
Wyllie, New River, AZ, came from behind by winning the last two races of
the season to earn his first SCORE season point title, driving a Chevy C1500.
In Class 7, Dan
Chamlee pulled of a major upset to earn the class title without winning a race
in his Ford Ranger.
Dave Collier, San
Marcos, CA, used his one season win to defeat a large group of racers in
Class 5/1600 in his VW Baja Bug.
With two race wins,
Kreg Donahoe, Anaheim, CA, won Stock Mini in a Toyota Tacoma for his first
SCORE season title and the son/father team of Matt and Steve Scaroni, Heber,
CA, won once in Protruck to win their first SCORE season crown.
Mexico’s
Gerardo Rojas, Guerrero Vicente and Sergio Vega, Ensenada, claimed their first
SCORE title by going undefeated in three races and winning not only Class 30
(riders over 30 years old), but also the 2004 SCORE Overall Motorcycle crown
on a Honda XR650R.
Leading the other
motorcycle class champs was the American Honda Class 22 (Open) team of Steve
Hengeveld, Oak Hills, CA/Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, Calif. and Kendall
Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif. Hengeveld/Campbell have now won 10 straight SCORE
races together on a Honda XR650R, and their three wins this year helped them
earn Campbell his seventh SCORE season title and Hengeveld his fourth while
Norman, who joined the team to help win the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, earned his
first crown.
In the hunt for
the Motorcycle SCORE Overall point crown, Rojas/Vega narrowly defeated Hengeveld/Campbell/Norman,
242-241.
In Class 50 (M/C
riders over 50), Richard Jackson, Acton, Calif. and Bob Wadlow, Arcadia, CA,
had one win to earn the class crown on a Honda XR650R. It was the 10th SCORE
season title won by Jackson.
Jim O’Neal,
Chatsworth, CA, won Class 40 (M/C riders over 40) on a Honda XR650R to earn
his fifth SCORE season crown.
Joe Desrosiers,
San Marcos, CA, led his team to their second straight title in Class 21
(M/C under 250cc) with two race wins on a Yamaha YZ250.
The overall and
Class 25 ATV point champions were Ruben Martin/Gilberto Santana, Tijuana, Mexico,
who rode a Bombardier Baja X to a perfect SCORE season with three wins.
