SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup I next
Baldwin Bros 1-2 in SCORE Trophy-Truck; MacCachren/Freeman
Lead Overall Points, Class 1-2/1600 in 2005 SCORE Desert Series
Son-Father Team of Andy and Scott McMillin leading
unlimited Class 1 and are second in SCORE Overall points
LOS
ANGELES, CA (June 21, 2005) -- Veteran desert-racing champion
Rob MacCachren and his third-generation protégé Bryan
Freeman, both of Las Vegas, remain on top of the Overall and Class 1-2/1600
point standings after three rounds of the six-race
2005 SCORE Desert Series.
MacCachren, 40,
was the 2001 SCORE Overall point champion Freeman, 25, is currently in his
first full season racing with SCORE.
Driving a Fraley-VW,
MacCachren and Freeman finished second out of 46 starters in Class 1-2/1600
in the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in
January and followed that up by defeating a field of 27 starters in the
Tecate SCORE
San Felipe 250 in February. The pair continued their winning ways earlier
this month by finishing first at the 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in a
race-high field
of 38 starters in the single or two- seater class for open wheel desert
race cars with 1600cc VW engines.
MacCachren
also splits time driving in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division
with team-owner Gus Vildosola of Mexico in the No. 4 Vildosola Racing
Ford F-150, finishing ninth out of a SCORE record field of 29 starters
in the marquee SCORE
racing division.
SCORE points are
determined both on final finishing position and number of vehicles that started
the race within each class.
The competition
is close
and fierce
as a total of 70 points separate the top 15 leaders.
The World’s
Foremost Desert Racing Series has some regroup and rebuild time
now. Before heading to the 10th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 on Sept.
10, the
SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Cup I will be held July 28-30
at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A special non-points
event at LVMS, the SCORE Las
Vegas Terrible’s Cup I will feature the SCORE Trophy-Trucks
and the unlimited Class 1. It will include a race for Class 1-2/1600
and two additional combined
class groups of Classes 7/7S/7SX and Class 10/SCORE Lite competing
on a man-made 1.5-mile ‘chunk of Baja’ desert course.
“Bryan has
been doing great so far and I drove the second half of the SCORE Baja 500
in SCORE Trophy-Truck so I let Bryan drive all but the last 20 miles
in Class 1-2/1600,” said MacCachren, a seven-time SCORE
class point champion and 2001 SCORE Overall and Class 1-2/1600
season point winner. “Bryan is
a third-generation desert racer and you can see the talent
his family has by just like at the intensity in his eyes and
watching how well he does his homework
on the course. I won four of five races last year and lost
the class and overall title by just four points and we don’t
want that to happen this year. As for our plans now, I will
drive the SCORE Las Vegas Primm
300 and we
will split
the time again in the SCORE Baja 1000. I will obviously keep
driving with Gus Vildosola in SCORE Trophy-Truck as well.”
In
the current SCORE point standings, MacCachren, who has won
11 SCORE races since 2001, has 239 points, 30 points more
than unlimited
Class
1 point leaders
Andy McMillin and his father Scott McMillin, Poway, CA,
have in their Jimco-Chevy.
The versatile
MacCachren, whose seven SCORE season point crowns have been in four different
classes, has
stretched
his lead
in Class 1-2/1600.
Journeyman
L.J. Kennedy, Orange, CA, is second in class and third
in SCORE Overall points with 196 in a Porter-VW. Kennedy
is just
two points
ahead of SCORE
rookie
Caleb
Gaddis, El Centro, CA, who is third in Class 1-2/1600
and fourth in SCORE Overall points in a Tubular-VW.
Now
fifth in the SCORE Overall point standings and leading Class 10 in a Tatum-Toyota
is Ron Dalke, Tucson, AZ,
with 180 points.
Following up his
first-ever SCORE class win in San Felipe with a second in Ensenada, defending
SCORE Trophy-Truck
season champ
Jason
Baldwin,
Laguna
Beach, CA,
maintains a narrow 12-point lead over his brother Josh
Baldwin, Newport Beach, CA, in the featured SCORE racing division
for high-tech,
800-horsepower,
unlimited
production trucks. The Baldwins, with 179 and 167 points
respectively, both drive Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Trucks.
Jason Baldwin is
sixth on the SCORE
Overall point
leaderboard.
By winning in
San Felipe and Ensenada, MacCachren also put himself at the top of the list
in the chase for the
$50,000
Kartek Off-Road
bonus purse.
The top
three overall point leaders in the 2005 SCORE Desert
Series will receive bonus money of $25,000, $15,000
and $10,000
from the
Southern California
aftermarket
company.
A total of just
three points separate seventh through 10th place so far in the SCORE Overall
point standings.
Seventh overall
and leading Class 5/1600 points in a VW Baja Bug is Mexico’s
Marcos Nunez with 173 points, one more than two
teams tied for eighth overall and fourth in Class 1-2/1600: Rick
Boyer, Bakersfield, CA, in a Lothringer-VW and
Scott Wisdom, Lake Forest, CA, in a Mirage-VW.
Leading
SCORE Lite in a Jimco-VW and 10th in SCORE Overall points with 170 is the
team of Tom Watson/Tim
Noe, both
of El Centro,
CA.
Six points behind
Josh Baldwin for third in SCORE Trophy-Truck is Bob Shepard, Phoenix, in
a Chevy
Silverado while
fourth in the marquee
class with 160
points is the team of Mark Post, San Juan Capistrano,
CA/Curt LeDuc,
Cherry Valley,
CA, in a Ford F-150. Tied for fifth in SCORE
Trophy-Truck with 155 points are the brother
team of Tim and Ed
Herbst, Las Vegas,
in a Ford F-150 and
the father-son team of Travis Coyne and Marty
Coyne, El Centro, CA in a Ford
F-150.
Among the motorcycle
classes, Mexico’s Gerardo Rojas and Arturo
Salas lead the overall and Class 30 (riders over 30 years old) points after
two races
with
134 points on a Honda XR60R.
Second overall
motorcycle and leading Class 40 (riders over 40) with 130 points is the team
led by Jim O’Neal, Chatsowrth,
CA and Tim Withers, Pepeekeo, Hawaii on a Honda XR650R.
Third overall
among the motorcycle classes is Tim Morton, Escondido, CA, who leads
Class 21 points on a Honda CRFX250 while
ahead in the ATV overall
and Class 25 point standings is the team led by Josh Frederick, Moapa, Nev.,
on a
Honda TRX450R.
Three class leaders
in the 2005 SCORE Desert Series who have all started the year undefeated
with three consecutive wins in the car and
truck classes are:
John Holmes, Olvenhain, CA (Class 7S-Ford Ranger), Todd Wyllie, New River,
AZ (Class 8-Chevy C1500) and Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 9-Garibay-VW).
Brothers
Donald Moss, Sacramento, CA/Kenneth Moss, Marysville, CA (Class 3-Ford
Bronco) and Craig Turner, Yor00) and Eric Fisher, Ensenada, Mexico (Class
9-Garibay-VW).
Brothers Donald
Moss, Sacramento, CA/Kenneth Moss, Marysville, CA (Class 3-Ford Bronco)
and Craig Turner, Yorba Linda, CA (Class 7-Ford
Ranger)
still lead their classes despite losing for the first time this year at the
Tecate
SCORE Baja 500.
