Round 5 of 2005 SCORE Desert Series LOS ANGELES, CA (August 9, 2005) -- Following
a highly-successful stadium-style, short-course event
in Las Vegas, the world’s best desert racers return to their normal competition
format with a race-record field of over 200 vehicles expected for next month’s
10th Annual SCORE Las Vegas The computerized drawing for starting positions, by classes, will be held Saturday at the SCORE Int’l headquarters in Los Angeles. Celebrating its 32nd season this year as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, the SCORE Desert Series will be returning to Southern Nevada for the last of its three annual races in the U.S. The 10th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will feature 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in Primm, located 35 miles south of Las Vegas at the California border. This year’s starting list is expected to easily eclipse last year’s record field of 184 starters. As it has been for the past three years, the race will be split into two groups with the open wheel and VW baja bug classes starting at 6 a.m. The truck classes, including the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division along with the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel class, will start at 1 p.m. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with an eight-hour time limit. The start/finish line area will be located northeast of the rear of Buffalo Bill’s Resort in Primm.
Veteran desert-racing champion Rob MacCachren and his third-generation protégé Bryan Freeman, both of Las Vegas, remain on top of the Overall and Class 1-2/1600 point standings after three rounds of the 2005 SCORE Desert Series. MacCachren, 40, was the 2001 SCORE Overall point champion Freeman, 25, is currently in his first full season racing with SCORE. Driving a Fraley-VW, MacCachren and Freeman finished second out of 46 starters in Class 1-2/1600 in the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in January and followed that up by defeating a field of 27 starters in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in February. The pair continued their winning ways in early June by finishing first at the 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in a race-high field of 38 starters in the single or two-seater class for open wheel desert race cars with 1600cc VW engines. MacCachren also splits driving time in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division with team-owner Gus Vildosola of Mexico in the No. 4 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150. The pair finished ninth out of a SCORE record field of 29 starters in the marquee SCORE racing division in June’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500. In the current SCORE point standings, MacCachren, who has11 SCORE class race wins since 2001, has 231 points, 22 points more than unlimited Class 1 point leaders Andy McMillin and his father Scott McMillin, Poway, CA, have in their Jimco-Chevy. The versatile MacCachren, whose seven SCORE season point crowns have been in four different classes, has stretched his lead in Class 1-2/1600. Journeyman L.J. Kennedy, Orange, CA, is second in class and third in SCORE Overall points with 196 in a Porter-VW. Kennedy is just two points ahead of SCORE rookie Caleb Gaddis, El Centro, CA, who is third in Class 1-2/1600 and fourth in SCORE Overall points in a Tubular-VW. Now fifth in the SCORE Overall point standings and leading Class 10 in a Tatum-Toyota is Ron Dalke, Tucson, AZ, with 180 points. Following up his first-ever SCORE class win in San Felipe with a second in Ensenada, defending SCORE Trophy-Truck season champ Jason Baldwin, Laguna Beach, CA, maintains a 12-point lead over his brother Josh Baldwin, Newport Beach, CA, in the featured SCORE racing division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks. The Baldwins, with 179 and 167 points respectively, both drive Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Trucks. Jason Baldwin is sixth on the SCORE Overall point leaderboard.
